Steve O’Conner, Presidio Brass trumpeter, proposed to Maria Elena Altany, during the band’s performance at the El Dorado County Community Concert Association’s concert at Union Mine High School on Wednesday, March 20.
The proposal came during the playing of “Maria” from West Side Story. The program by Presidio Brass featured “Sounds of the Cinema” and selections by Leonard Bernstein were played after intermission. The “West Side Story” music made for a perfect time to have Altany come on stage.
Trumpeter T.J. Tesh held the microphone as French horn player Mike McCoy, trombone player Sean Reusch and tuba player Scott Sutherland looked on as O’Conner knelt to ask Altany for her hand in marriage.
He then placed the ring on her finger to the applause of the audience and after a few moments of surprise she gave O’Conner a big hug of acceptance. The audience again applauded.
