This move has been a tough one. No, I am not referring to the Mountain Democrat move; that was a piece of cake. Our esteemed publisher took care of the majority of the planning and workload for that move, and as far as I’m concerned it went fairly smoothly.

This move just happened to coincide with me personally moving homes, and that was — ahem —difficult.

For the most part I felt like I was riding a psychotic horse through a burning barn, if you catch my drift. My back is killing me, I ate really crummy junk food for almost three weeks straight, and believe me when I tell you that it took a toll on my middle-aged physique and psyche.

I needed to recharge with some good, quality food and decided I would start somewhere very close to home — the work home that is. The Brick Oven Pub, at 2875 Ray Lawyer Drive in Placerville, is right by the new Mountain Democrat offices.

Maybe you have noticed that I have been scouring the area around the new Mountain Democrat for special places to dine. I am happy to let you know that I found another one.

Exactly 45 paces from the employee entrance, the Brick Oven Pub is the definition of truth in advertising. They have, indeed, a brick oven in which to perfectly cook some fairly phenomenal and unique pizza pies.

The staff of the Mountain Democrat was treated to a few of these pies and the overwhelming consensus was “Wow.” One employee remarked that it heightened the mood and made everyone more productive, although now that I think about it, she was probably just positioning for more free pizzas in the future …

The clear standout was the Athena, which consisted of pesto, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes and feta, but there are others that are equally fabulous like the meat eaters delight appropriately called the Mighty Meaty (ample amounts of sausage, bacon and pepperoni), or its polar opposite the Veg. Head (pesto, artichokes, spinach and tomatoes). They also offer a variety of calzones and you can even build your own pizza and choose from over 27 fresh toppings.

Also, as the name implies, they’ve got beer. Some of the 25 varieties they currently have on tap are (huge breath): Auburn Alehouse Pilsner, Lost Coast Tangerine Wheat, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Fuller’s ESB, Mendocino Eye Of The Hawk, Rubicon and Lagunitas IPA, Black Diamond Rampage, Guinness (Yes, personal fave!), Grand Teton Pursuit Of Hoppiness, and many, many more.

These are what they had available at the time of this writing, so it may have changed. Our expert zymurgist simply raves about the choices available and is a cherished customer of the highest order.

A place where everybody knows your name, indeed.

Brick Oven Pub is located at 2875 Ray Lawyer Drive in Placerville (the same parking lot as the Mountain Democrat) and its phone number is 530-622-7420. They are open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week at 11 a.m.
