CAMERON PARK — Does everyone say your barbecue is best. Do you have a grilling secret that friends and neighbors are constantly raving about?
If so, think about entering the Grill’n & Chill’n barbecue competition at Cameron Park Lake, 2989 Cambridge Road in Cameron Park, on Saturday, Sept. 15.
The grilling and chilling is from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Daniel Friese, program coordinator for the Cameron Park Community Services District, said everyone loves to barbecue or eat barbecue so this should be a great event.
He feels that Grill’n and Chill’n will join the Summer Spectacular that is held around the Fourth of July, as another successful Cameron Park event.
“Everyone’s got friends on the block, or friends they know who think that they are the best in barbecuing,” Friese said. “Well, come out and prove it.”
Friese said that competitors can heat it up in sauces, vegetables, chicken, tri-tip and ribs.
“Some people can cook every single one of them,” Friese said. “Other people can just pick and choose what they want to do.”
Judges from the Kansas City Barbecue Society are expected to be on hand to judge contestants in all categories, Friese said.
First place trophies will be handed out to the winner in each category.
“On top of that, we’re also doing a Peoples Choice award,” Friese said. “People can purchase tickets (through the Cameron Park Community Services District’s office at 2502 Country Club Drive in Cameron Park), sample the food and put tickets (into a bin) by the one they thought was the best in each category. The winner with the most tickets at the end of the day in each category will get 50 percent of the ticket sales and the bragging rights.”
Barbecue vendors are also scheduled to sell food and barbecue related products, Friese said. The number of vendors from El Dorado County and the Sacramento area is expected to grow in upcoming days, Friese said.
Friese is encouraging residents who want to compete to sign up by Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m.
Call the district office at 530-677-2231 to take part. The entry fee is $100.
Renegade, a Styx tribute band, and Rockin’ Down the Hiway, a classic rock ‘n’ roll band, are providing the music. Rockin’ Down the Hiway is expected to take the stage between 1 to 2 p.m. and Renegade should follow around 5 p.m.
Craft exhibitors are also scheduled to display their wares during the event. Craft exhibits can call the district office or register at cameronpark.org to take part.
Admission for Grill’n & Chill’n is $5 per person. Children 6 and under are free. The Fun Zone, which brought in a climbing wall and various rides for Summer Spectacular, will be at Grill’n and Chill’n, Friese said.
Proceeds from the event go towards improvements within the district, Friese noted.
