“The locally-based vocalist and impresario Lee takes on one of the greatest legends as she pays tribute to Billie Holiday. Lee’s warm, engaging style is quite different from Lady Day’s raw emotionalism but the Sacramento singer knows how to tell a story and thoroughly understands the American Songbook, as well.” (Marcus Crowder, The Sacramento Bee)
Expect some classic holiday songs, too from this elegant chanteuse and her excellent band.
The series, which ranges from straight-ahead to bop to vocalese, and brings in players from across the West Coast, is programmed by local alto sax player and composer, Jeff Alkire. Often, great area players stop and sit in during the warm and convivial evening.
Cost is $10.There is free parking in the Beatnik lot.
Beatnik Studios is at 723 S St., a new location in the former Pamela Skinner Gallery, in Sacramento.
