Last Day for Venus in Aries This is your last chance to take advantage of the fiery energy of Venus in Aries, the sign of initiation, newness and beginner’s luck. If there’s someone you want to know better, ask now while the energy is impulsive, passionate and assertive. Tomorrow, a new cycle in the realm [...]

Part II: Scarce H2O

Editor’s note: Somerset’s Norm Stoldt, aka Stormin’ Norman, experienced a series of difficulties on his recent quest to conquer a 585-mile section of the Continental Divide Trail. Fearing the worst — being rescued — he aborted. Below is the second part of that story …  Conditions improved as I plodded along, I began passing in-and-out [...]

Cosmic Public Service Announcement From the middle of her journey through impatient young Aries, the sun offers a public service announcement: Chill. Don’t buy into the hype. Your phone calls can wait; you’ll get there when you get there; urgency is an opinion. Rushing only contributes to nervousness, excess stress and hot tempers. Let the [...]

Pluto Sings Belafonte Pisces Harry Belafonte sang of the interconnectedness of the fire, water, mountains and spirit in his interpretation of the African folk song “Turn the World Around.” The song suggests that by returning to our elemental selves, we make the world turn. Pluto delivers a similar message as he continues to challenge the [...]

Board of Supervisors approves web portal and grant program

The Transient Occupancy Tax will fund a new website promoting the county, an aggressive  grant acquisition program and mini-grants to “fabric-of-the-community” groups. The Board of Supervisors also tacked an additional year onto six current arts and tourism contracts funded by the 10 percent add-on to room rates in El Dorado County. The decisions were based [...]

Full Moon Eve On the eve of the full moon in amorous Libra, love for love’s sake seems like a fun thing to aspire to. When the discerning Virgo moon gives way to Libra’s spell in the evening, it will be tempting to let go and invite romance to lead the way. Mars and Pluto [...]

Gemini Moon Asks About the Chase Conventional wisdom suggests that when something is working, don’t try to fix it. But the trendy Gemini moon asks: What happens when you look out into the big world at what others are doing and conclude that your own efforts, though functional, are not up-to-date? Just realize that you’re [...]

EDC survivors of shipwreck hold reunion

Survivors of the Costa Concordia shipwreck gathered Sunday, Jan. 13, for a reunion to remember what happened a year ago when the passenger ship they were on struck a reef and capsized off the coast of Italy, killing 32 people.

Reluctant to talk to the media until now, the group of El Dorado County residents — Joanna and Adam Lynch, Phyllis Eggan, and Brenda Miller — recalled what happened that day and afterwards. Their story is a tale of survival, kindness, friendship and faith.

Coming home for Christmas

The news of the passing of jazz music legend Dave Brubeck earlier this month brought back memories of my most eventful journey home for Christmas. My high school years were spent attending a military academy not too far from Knoxville, Tenn. In the 1960s it was not unusual for parents to send their boys off [...]

Franckly speaking: My role model is no bigger than my thumb

When I go to our place in the country, one of the first things I do is hang up our bird feeders. Minutes later the birds zoom in, like customers who’ve memorized the hours of their favorite ice cream store. I arrive. The birds come. What could go wrong? The hummingbirds are among the most [...]

Class favorite: Cosmetology teacher retires

After 26 years, a beloved cosmetology instructor at Shenandoah High School is hanging up her smock, putting away her curling iron, and retiring. Mary Ann Turpin-Elder, who has been teaching in El Dorado County since 1986, will celebrate her last day of full-time teaching on Halloween. However she isn’t going away entirely because she will continue [...]

To remodel or not to remodel

Seven questions homeowners need to ask before commencing construction “Remodeling isn’t for everyone, and many times it could be a downright bad decision,” according to Dan Fritschen, founder of remodelormove.com. “It’s well worth your time to pause and consider what your proposedproject entails, and whether the it’s worth the time, energy, and money you’ll end up pouring into it.” [...]

EID’s Abercrombie addresses public concerns over financing

Gadfly Greg Prada of Cameron Park has been criticizing the El Dorado Irrigation District for what he says is profligate spending on employee benefits. “While (General Manager Jim) Abercrombie asserted that without the refinancing rates would need to be even higher, he failed to disclose that the $16 million of deferred debt repayment really is [...]

As the moon shifts from Libra to Scorpio, so may some of your attitudes toward a close friend. Platonic feelings have a way of transforming under the Scorpio moon, which tends to bring sparks to situations that are poised to ignite. The passionate Leo and Mercury traveling backward in the sign as well set the [...]

Jupiter and Mars are like Batman and Robin: cosmic superheroes intent on blocking the potential negatives of Mercury’s retrograde and the sun square Saturn. They needn’t be so vigilant, though, because the Gemini moon is on our side, suggesting we talk about problems, share knowledge and work toward satisfying solutions. ARIES (March 21-April 19). Expect the unexpected when previewing homes, land

Whenever a seller or their agent open up their home to prospective buyers there is always a chance of unintended consequences. Stuff happens when strangers go wandering around an unfamiliar home or property that’s listed for sale. I was reminded of how freak incidents occur while reviewing a decision by the United States District Court [...]

This Mercury cycle will continue until June 7. ARIES (March 21-April [...]

Welcomed help from friendly neighbor

My clients told me about the home they wanted to buy before it was listed for sale. A friend of theirs knew the owners who needed to sell and relocate out of the area. When I received the information, I called the owners to inquire if they were indeed planning on selling and needed an [...]
