Something to think about: A face to remember

I hadn’t touched my father’s face, except to kiss him hello or goodbye, since I was a baby. Babies always explore the people they love — pulling noses, putting a finger on a lip or an eye, patting cheeks — but I outgrew that stage and Dad was always moving too fast. In the darkened […]

Church youths landscape Missouri Flat homes

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted,” graced the neon-yellow T-shirts of more than 70 young people who spent their spring break in a labor of love — transforming the Missouri Flat mill houses area on Wedge Hill off Missouri Flat Road from dilapidated to cheerful.

Dozens of students from the Solid Rock Faith Center, Cameron Park Christian Center and Cold Springs Community Church banded together on Wednesday and Thursday to build fences, create a new play area with a play structure, plant trees and flowers, cut back overgrowth, clean and revamp road beds and landscape for the common area shared by some 13 homes.

“We usually go on a mission to Los Angeles or Mexico during the break,” said Sean Pritchard, youth pastor for Solid Rock, “but this year we decided to do something in our own community. Often you don’t even realize the need is there.”

1854-1859 – A wild and woolly era

When red-headed Dan Gelwicks put his premier edition of the Mountain Democrat out on the streets of Placerville on Saturday, Feb. 24, 1854, he and his newspapers probably got splattered with mud. Muddy streets were an issue then, in the early stages of Placerville’s metamorphosis. It had been a rowdy mining camp in ’49; now […]
