Horoscope, Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Mercury Changes Signs Mercury rules two astrological signs: Gemini and Virgo. When he enters either realm, it’s like he’s coming home. (If Gemini is his main residence, Virgo is the beach house.) So even though solar flares are predicted to peak now, Mercury’s transit into Gemini brings a comfortable vibration to the area of communication. [...]

Something to think about: Bugging out

The Mountain Democrat is moving — actually, we already have moved. We talked about it for almost a year, but we began bugging out in earnest a month ago. Partitions and cabinets began disappearing, allowing a full view of people we’d always known were somewhere in the office. Ancient equipment, long hoarded in the depths [...]

At a glance: Time to celebrate

It is May 1 and that means May Day. The early May Day celebrations were quite a party when Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, was feted. In Celtic cultures it was the festival of Beltane and Germanic people had Walpurgis Night to bring in spring. Growing up there was always a maypole dance and [...]

Pot calling kettle black?

EDITOR: On April 5, 2013, the Mountain Democrat published on its front page a negative article about Fire Chief Bruce Lacher. A second article followed a few days later. The allegations against Chief Lacher stemmed from disgruntled Firefighters Union leaders and from other disgruntled persons. Is the pot calling the kettle black? While every individual [...]

Take my word for it: Helpless and afraid

The bombings in Boston on Monday have shaken us all up. While we wait for details on the who and the why, it’s hard not to feel anything but helpless and afraid. Sure, there’s anger, which I’m personally sharing, despite having a lot less vested than relatives of victims, or the victims themselves. But the [...]

Take my word for it: A scary moment

Nothing prepares you for a major car accident. There are precautions you can take in case an accident occurs — proper insurance coverage for your vehicle, health insurance for yourself, etc. — but when a crash happens, more than just the hunk of metal (or fiberglass) you’re in is shaken up. I received a call [...]

First day focuses on witness, recordings
