Take my word for it: A scary moment

Nothing prepares you for a major car accident. There are precautions you can take in case an accident occurs — proper insurance coverage for your vehicle, health insurance for yourself, etc. — but when a crash happens, more than just the hunk of metal (or fiberglass) you’re in is shaken up. I received a call [...]

The balancing act: Who are the real Luddites?

Luddites were early 19th century English textile workers who protested against the industrialization of the textile industry. Machines and low-cost labor were about to cost them their job. Many people died in the ensuing fight against textile industrialization. Later the term became synonymous with a person or movement who was opposed to advancement or new [...]

Looking for good Samaritans

EDITOR: On Saturday night, Jan. 19, I was westbound on Highway 50, a few miles east of Pollock Pines, and had an accident and found myself in a ditch I was unable to get out of. Several cars passed over the next 40-50 minutes. Nobody stopped to see if I needed help. Finally, three men [...]

Another gun-related tragedy

EDITOR: Another mass killing, and in an elementary school, no less. The shooting and the aftermath are beyond description. Down to a personal level, the pain each individual family feels at the loss of their child is where the rubber meets the road. This is the same feeling felt when any family member is lost [...]

Reporting from the other side of the bar

I came home one day in early August to get one of the single most-dreaded pieces of mail an American citizen can get: a jury summons. My first reaction was something along the lines of, “Please don’t let it be for the Cameron Park courthouse.” Being the Mountain Democrat’s crime and court reporter, my average [...]
