Wild-Abandon Moon The Sagittarius full moon eclipse breaks through the limits. Its methods are rather simple: Question everything, even your own thinking, (SET ITAL) especially (END ITAL) your own thinking. To do so is not a mark of madness or weakness, but rather of high intelligence and emotional maturity. Just because we think it doesn’t [...]

Gemini Sun Communicates What I’ve noticed lately is that writing statements by hand in a stylized way is a popular form of expression among young people. Letters imbued with artistry and personal meaning are perhaps an answer to an overly digitized society. Or maybe they’re just the most natural way to communicate the mind. The [...]

Elevated fire danger brings risk for Memorial Day weekend

Sacramento – Sunshine and blue skies make this time of year perfect for camping and outdoor activities. With the Memorial Day weekend approaching, Cal Fire reminds all Californians about the increased fire danger this year and asks everyone of to be extra careful in the outdoors. “Holiday weekends are a great time for friends and [...]

The weekly Daley: A spiritual dilemma — or not

I’ve checked out an interesting online discussion that’s been attracting a lot of noise this week. Why does God allow tornadoes that kill children and adults in Oklahoma? It’s not a new discussion of course. Why does God allow horrific events like the massacre at Newtown’s elementary school or Super Storm Sandy or Hurricane Katrina [...]

Make your day(s) visiting upscale Carmel

Editor’s note: Freelance journalist Jeffrey Weidel makes regular contributions to the Mountain Democrat during the winter season reporting on the various area ski resorts. Occasionally, Weidel provides writeups on spring and summer locales as is the case here with a trip he took to Carmel, the location Ponderosa golfer Corey Pereira will visit in early [...]

Kyburz memorial celebrates family’s role in history

On a bright Saturday morning during the sesquicentennial year of the nation’s Civil War, Samuel E. Kyburz, a veteran of that war, received a proper military memorial service in the Clarksville Cemetery located on the rocky hill immediately east of El Dorado Hills Town Center, where records show he was laid to rest in 1917 without military ceremony or protocol.

The Clarksville Region Historical Society remedied that situation on May 11, 2013, 96 years late, with help from …

Off a cliff

EDITOR: On April 9, 2013 three friends joined me riding our Quads in the National Forest when our adventure suddenly turned into a rescue. One of our riders slipped off the trail and down a 70-foot cliff resulting in numbness to his fingers and legs. I carry a SPOT (Satellite Personal Tracker) and as soon [...]

Gemini Energy of Optical Illusion Gemini is the prevailing energy as we head toward the full moon lunar eclipse at the end of the week: quick, bright, social and endlessly trendy. So much changes as the planets party in Gemini that it’s like there’s a swirl of energy all around us making it seem like [...]

AG praises increased funding for Armed and Prohibited Persons program

SACRAMENTO — Attorney General Kamala D. Fairbanks has a traditional, colonial flavor

The Fairbanks is a traditional large home, designed to provide plenty of living space for spreading out during long, cold winter months. The central section of its exterior has a symmetrical, almost colonial look. Handsome brick columns support an arched and gabled entry that creates a frame highlighting the front door, accented by sidelights and [...]

Property acquisition rules for owners, investors and flippers

Homes are pretty versatile, as has been their transformation over the last 150 years. Housing has dramatically changed from its primary function of providing basic shelter and security. Today, homes offer something for everyone. We sleep at home but many of us also work from home. Homes can be an entertainment venue. They may make [...]

An accident left one man seriously injured and in need of rescue in the Eldorado National Forest on April 9. Sam White, Frank Showers and two other elderly gentlemen were riding quads, having gone about 17 miles into the forest by lunchtime. Around 3 p.m., disaster struck. They were riding along when “we came upon [...]

D’Agostini’s meeting

EDITOR: Mr. Garon criticized the Sheriff’s letter to Vice President Joe Biden on gun control and he made some senseless comment on the Sheriff’s refusal to accept the social scientists as experts in the field. Approximately 19 law enforcement agencies wrote to the V.P. and most were from Northern California. There were over 500 law [...]

County honors kayaker’s life-saving efforts

The right guy in the right place at the right time,” is how Mark Divittorio was informally described by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, May 14. The veteran kayaker was awarded a hero’s plaque by the board for his rescue of a Livermore family from the American River near Kyburz on April 4.

Divittorio described his role in the dramatic events in a bit …

Wildfire Awareness Week event includes Smokey hot air balloon

STATELINE, NEV. — Lake Tahoe fire protection agencies all agree: defensible space isn’t a bunch of hot air. To back up the importance of defensible space, they’re organizing a free Wildfire Awareness Week kickoff event that includes free tethered Smokey Bear hot air balloon rides (weather permitting), firefighter photo opportunities, a pancake breakfast and more [...]

ELK GROVE — In the first minute of its CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II title game on Saturday, the Ponderosa High girls soccer were dealt a major setback.
