1300 ft.: Big flume, canal bid OK’d

A $5 million construction bid was let for Flume 41 by the El Dorado Irrigation District. The board voted unanimously April 22 to approve the nearly $5.8 million project.

Flume 41 is a 697-foot-long deteriorated wooden flume resting 452 feet of stacked rock installed in 1876. The rest of the flume is on less secure individual footings.

Crime Log: April 15-18

April 15 9:23 a.m. A $3000 outboard motor was stolen off a boat while the boat was parked outside a repair shop on Greenstone Road in El Dorado. Local couple survives Boston Marathon explosions

Placerville audiologist L. Mark Payne and his wife Alison are looking forward to their return to the safety and “sleepiness” of Placerville. Alison Payne was running the Boston Marathon on April 15 and Mark was waiting for her at the finish line, camera in hand, when two explosions went off.

“All the people were cheering the finishers and the finishers were waving to us in the crowd when the deafening explosions went off and turned the whole event into a nightmare,” wrote Mark Payne in an e-mail to his friend and tennis buddy, Bill Schultz.

Payne reported that Alison was about five minutes behind her usual marathon pace and about a half mile from the finish line.

Family rescued from river

A family was rescued after its car plunged into the South Fork of the American River on April 4.

El Dorado County Fire Engine 21 responded within three minutes to a report at 2:58 p.m. that a GMC Acadia was in the river, on its side, near Highway 50 at Whitehall, said Battalion Chief Mike Pott. The car had hit a mile marker, tree and boulder before ending up in the river. The unit was returning from another vehicle accident in Kyburz …

High-speed accident leaves teens with ‘major injuries’

Three juveniles were involved in a traffic accident Sunday evening, leaving two with major injuries and one with unknown injuries. Oak Ridge student dies in sledding accident

An Oak Ridge High School student and football player was pronounced dead after a sledding accident Feb. 17.

Dylan Ridolfi, 15, had been sledding with his family at Sheep’s Flat, about a mile away from the Mt. Rose summit near Route 341 in Washoe County, Nev., where witnesses say he had been going at a “high rate of speed” before hitting two trees, said Washoe County Sheriff’s Deputy Armando Avina.

Deputies were dispatched at 3:34 p.m., with medical units, fire engines and a Care Flight helicopter ambulance also responding. Ridolfi was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:10 p.m.

Learning to fly: Local youth earns helicopter pilot’s license

Valentine’s Day was a special treat for El Dorado Hills resident Austin Bowa who not only turned 17 but also earned his private pilot’s license to fly a helicopter.

His mother Shelly said she believes her son is now the youngest licensed helicopter pilot in the United States.

A year ago, Bowa took his first solo flight in a small two-seater helicopter at Auburn Airport with family, friends and the media looking on.

An accident on Jan. 7 claimed one life and injured another Sly Park Road.  A 1993 blue Ford Ranger was traveling westbound on Sly Park Road at 1:25 p.m., going between 50 and 60 mph when it traveled off the north shoulder, CHP Officer Quinn Cuthbertson said. EDC survivors of shipwreck hold reunion

Survivors of the Costa Concordia shipwreck gathered Sunday, Jan. 13, for a reunion to remember what happened a year ago when the passenger ship they were on struck a reef and capsized off the coast of Italy, killing 32 people.

Reluctant to talk to the media until now, the group of El Dorado County residents — Joanna and Adam Lynch, Phyllis Eggan, and Brenda Miller — recalled what happened that day and afterwards. Their story is a tale of survival, kindness, friendship and faith.
