As we were: Politics, sports and more

25 Years ago May 18, 1988 Lowe, 2 challengers to debate tonight District 2 county Supervisor Pat Lowe is in a three-way race to retain her seat on the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors. Challenging her are Steve Bailey of Diamond Springs and Neva Roberts of South Lake Tahoe. All three candidates will appear tonight at [...]

Massive Mello-Roos planned

“Chief Administrative Office requesting Board direction regarding a Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program in conjunction with Ygrene Energy Fund.” That was the May 14 agenda item for the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors. With the support of the Builders Exchange and big-name contractor Carter-Kelly, it’s no wonder the CAO is pushing this scheme [...]

Homeward Moon The void-of-course moon spell will be broken with the moon’s entrance into Cancer, her home. This is the moon of domestic harmony and maternal nurturing. Does your home provide sanctuary from the demands of the outside world? If not, that’s something to fix pronto, and this is just the moon to support your [...]

The weekly Daley: Wasn’t it only yesterday?

Remember way back when, a couple of weeks ago, North Korea posed the gravest threat to the civilized world? Within days, Jodi Arias posed the gravest threat to the known world as she took center stage and knocked North Korea on its keister and off the front page. Kim Jong Un rallied briefly around the [...]

The environment is the winner

COLOMA — El Dorado County elementary school students spent many hours prepping for the 29th annual Nature Bowl Semifinals held at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park on two separate days. “This is a real good way of bringing students together from all over the county to celebrate their knowledge of science and nature. It’s [...]

Nostalgic porch fronts lofty Clearheart

Associated Designs An old-fashioned wraparound porch welcomes family and friends to the Clearheart, an otherwise modern home packed with popular amenities. Wood corbels accent the three front gables. Gently arched windows add grace and charm. Inside, cozy niches and intriguing ceiling treatments abound. In the entry, for instance, the ceiling is high and vaulted, with [...]

Ground zero: Keeping for keeps

I am not done yet. I wonder if I ever will be. Yes, I got my parents’ house cleared out all right. I sold, salvaged, saved and scrapped — all to get the old homestead cleaned up and on the market. The place was pristine. All new interior paint and finishes screamed fresh start for [...]

B-17 flying this weekend

As the engine fired up, it was impossible not to smile. We were embarking on a journey to the sky. For 30 minutes, we were passengers aboard the B-17 “Memphis Belle,” and this weekend, the public will have the same opportunity.

The same bomber used to film the 1990 movie will be available for public flights and tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 27-28 at the Mather Field Airport (Atlantic Aviation FBO, 10510 Superfortress Ave.) during the Liberty Foundation’s 2013 Salute to Veterans tour. It’s an experience unmatched by today’s standards, one very few still alive get to recall.

While we climbed the skies above Rancho Cordova, Folsom and Sacramento, there was a sense of sobriety amongst the media buckled in as we realized 10 men typically younger …

Tradition

EDITOR: This letter is in response to the removal of “history” at EDHS. Being a former player/student that played football at ED back in 1981-1984, I once again hear that the pictures that recognized players that made All League status or better have been removed from being viewed by others. I know that Mr. Barnes [...]

New Aries Moon The new Aries moon wants your wishes, and he’s in a generous mood, too. You don’t only get three; you get as many as you can think of. They won’t all come true, but they have a much better chance than those wishes you never make. Late at night, the moon shifts [...]

Billingsley’s Bullets: Pay attention to your needs, too

A lot of women I know are great at helping others and taking care of their family. They spend many hours daily making sure everyone else is OK. They really practice the idea that love begins when you get outside yourself. But what about their needs, their desires? • Ladies, can you remember the [...]

No San Stino development

EDITOR: Dear members of the Board of Supervisors, I know you get a lot of this stuff, so let me see if I can at least lighten it up or at least entertain you. Genie: “I am the great Genie of the San Stino Project Proposal. What may I do for you?” Stan: “My family built [...]

Mars, Uranus and Pluto Rumblings Troublemakers Mars and Uranus meet up. Throw a Pluto square into the mix, and it’s time to take precautions. Inspect your tools to make sure they are in good working order. Get up to date with car, house and health maintenance. Check your motives before you leave the house. Doing [...]

Sustained growth or another housing bubble?

“There appears to be no stopping this runaway real estate market. Home prices are increasing monthly and there are multiple offers on nearly every listed property. With low interest rates and many creative financing programs, nearly everyone is focused on buying real estate.” That was taken from a column I wrote in June 2005 when [...]

Yes, please do wake up

EDITOR: Since I was raised in Placerville and still have family here, I feel a strong obligation to respond to a couple of letters recently published. One of the unforeseen effects of the Internet has been a proliferation of fringe points of view, lending the veneer of legitimacy to absurd paranoia. Too many have lost [...]

Belltower: Old news comes and goes

The Mountain Democrat will be moving into its new digs on Placerville Drive in April. I won’t say what week because that is always a shifting target. Part of getting ready for the move involves clearing out old stuff. In my case that means thinning out the clip files. I get the job because I’m [...]

A worthy filibuster

As of Wednesday Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky, was holding up the vote to confirm a new CIA director because of some sketchy legal mumbling from Attorney General Eric Holder. Holder is the man who claimed no knowledge of Operation Fast and Furious, in which one of his chiefs authorized the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and [...]

Capricorn Moon of Trust No mortal is 100 percent loyal. Our very existence depends to some degree on the essential part of human nature called self-interest. Knowing this, we still put our faith in one another and quite often prove trustworthy. And under today’s Capricorn moon, you may notice that this is a beautiful part [...]
