Choices for Children: Strengthening families through a community of support services

The 28th Annual Kids’ Expo is an event held during the Month of the Young Child and Child Abuse Prevention Month. It is a fun-filled event held at the fairgrounds where families can enjoy hands-on activities, children’s performances, and the Swan Bros Circus while learning about community services, education programs, businesses, and extracurricular activities. The best part, it’s free because of generous donations from the El Dorado County Office of Education, the Mountain Democrat and other community sponsors. Children can sit behind the wheel of a fire truck, climb in a patrol car, swing at a tee ball, spin prize wheels, scoop and pour bird seed, and participate in a variety of arts and crafts activities.

Kids Expo is presented by Choices for Children (CfC), the public child care resource and referral agency that has been serving El Dorado County since 1976. Choices for Children is funded by the California Department of Education and has a database of more than 200 child care centers, preschools and family child care homes. CfC is the only agency in the county that receives monthly updates from Community Care Licensing about openings and closures of programs so information about available child care options is up to date.

Referral services are free and the child care experts at CfC can share helpful information about how to find a quality program. The referral specialist can explain what it means to be licensed, how to check on a program’s licensing history, and provide a check list of quality indicators that will help determine if a program is high quality.

In addition to help finding quality child care, Choices for Children also has a subsidized child care program that helps income-eligible parents pay for child care, a Child Care Food Program that reimburses Family Child Care Providers for serving nutritious meals and snacks, and an education Program that supports child care providers with professional development opportunities. All of these CfC programs strive to build a community of support services for families with young children.

Strong Families are what makes communities thrive and child care is an essential part of the economic success of a community. According to the Economic Opportunity Institute, “Child care is central to the economic well being of families, businesses and communities. Research indicates that high-quality care for young children directly affects the productivity of both the current and future workforce.”

Child care helps parents earn while children learn.

This is a great event...my grandson loves going to this..he is upset that he will not be going this year--but his baseball game is important as well to him.I hope parents, grandparents take their little ones...the kids have a blast--and its free.
