A series of classical concerts and performances, fine arts and cultural events will complement Lake Tahoe’s spectacular natural setting with the inaugural Lake Tahoe SummerFest 2012 (tahoesummerfest.org/), the first three weekends of August.
Set against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe, nine concerts will comprise the festival and feature renowned soloists and a world class orchestra of 38 instrumentalists from the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Seattle Symphony.
From Tchaikovsky to Mozart to Copland and Dvorak, classical music and performing arts will be celebrated on the beautiful lake campus of Sierra Nevada College, Nevada’s only four-year private liberal arts college, in Incline Village.
A 500-seat outdoor venue in a specially-designed acoustical concert tent will offer pure sound from instruments — without amplification, and inclined seating for unencumbered sightlines.
A Tahoe evening with the arts will be enhanced with selections from dining purveyors and select wineries.
The idea to combine fine arts and classical music into a festival as part of Tahoe’s overall identity includes a long term vision to establish a regional center for the performing arts to serve the Lake Tahoe Basin.
“With this initiative, we strive to develop a sense of regionalism through the arts and present an opportunity to light the torch to fuel a creative economy,” said Madylon Meiling, Lake Tahoe SummerFest founder and chair.
Lake Tahoe SummerFest Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Maestro Joel Revzen will lead world-class soloists and orchestra. Revzen brings extensive experience to the festival, having conducted and recorded with orchestras including the London Symphony, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Moscow Symphony, and the Aspen Music Festival.
“These highly gifted musicians have embraced the opportunity to make music together in one of the most exquisite settings in the world,” Revzen said.
SummerFest Concerts will be held the weekends of Aug. 3 to 5; Aug, 10 to 12 and Aug. 17 to 19. Themed Fridays include “All About Beethoven” and “Summer in Italy;” while family concerts are featured on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. To introduce and encourage interest in the arts with children, select rehearsals will be open on a complimentary basis.
Ticket prices are $85 for VIP seating, $50 in the guest section and $25 in the friends area. A VIP ticket and season pass provide backstage access and reception with the maestro and orchestra after the concert. Involvement from corporate and individual sponsors are encouraged.
