EL DORADO HILLS — Patience and heads-up base running aided Ponderosa 9/10s in its 16-5 victory over Gold Rush in the District 54 All Star Tournament at Mitchell Field Monday — called after four innings.

Ponderosa stayed alive to face Folsom American while Gold Rush was eliminated.

Logan Schweizer and Cole Spangler each singled to start the first for Ponderosa, and Schweizer scored on a wild pitch by Gold Rush’s Jared Taylor. Casey Tattersall singled to score Spangler, and Hayden Grevelding’s liner into right later scored Tattersall. Two more runs came in for Ponderosa as they took an early 5-0 lead.

Trailing by five, Gold Rush came right back in the bottom of the first. After Ryan Gines scored on a wild pitch, Colby Maitland scored on Luke Masloskie’s infield single. Two more runs scored on wild pitches, and Gold Rush pulled within 5-4.

Neither team got a runner past first base in the second, and the score remained the same headed to the third. Grevelding singled to right with one out, but Taylor worked a ground out and a fly ball to end the inning.

Tyler Forner, who came in for extended relief in the first inning, matched him pitch-for-pitch. Maitland and Taylor singled back-to-back to start the bottom of the third, but Forner struck out the next three batters to end the frame.

Ponderosa took control in the fourth. Spangler’s ground out scored Williams and awareness on the basepath coupled with multiple wild pitches from Gold Rush helped Pondo stretch the lead to 13-4.

Ben Imbsen singled to score Grevelding, and Ponderosa added two more runs to cap off the huge inning. Maitland singled to score Matthew Hemmenway in the bottom of the fourth for Gold Rush to answer but that was it.
