Ponderosa, Eagles in 2-2 tie

SHINGLE SPRINGS — Ponderosa girls soccer saw their win streak end Tuesday but not in the worst way. The Lady Bruins scored twice in the first half, gave up two in the second and finished with a 2-2 Delta River League draw with visiting Pleasant Grove.

Appearing to have control, Ponderosa’s second-half focus was to protect its goal. The Eagles seized upon that, grabbed momentum and nearly came out with a win.

“It was a game of two halves — we played great in the first and they played great in the second,” Bruin coach Greg Spangler said.

A switch and link between Sydney Rivera, Devin Redor and Samantha Fowler ended with Fowler’s line-drive, left-to-right shot that eluded everyone for a 1-0 advantage.

The Eagles tried to get going with their possession and build-up game but couldn’t penetrate Ponderosa’s back defense of Brittany Gisin, Redor, Ashlynn Johnson and Missy Hanson in front of keeper Allannah John.

Ponderosa doubled its lead seconds before the halftime break when Selena Brewer found Elana Hanson in the middle and Hanson, after creating space, put a nice strike into the upper right corner.

“I just saw an opportunity and took it,” Elana said. “This wasn’t the best we’ve played but we didn’t give up.”

That wasn’t an option under Pleasant Grove’s second-half onslaught. The Eagle runs on goal at one end diminished the Bruin’s chance to add on the other.

A slipped mark and blast from the top by Alyssa Andres put Pleasant Grove on the board and Fowler and midfielder Alivya Wimmer back in the game.

John left her line to go after an Eagle forward, got her hand on the ball but had no chance on a weakside shot by Bri Avila that tied the score.
