The Bruin quartet of Alex Roberds, Trevor Hammitt, Matt Culver and Nicholas Bruks, all seniors, finished with their best time this season at 3:20.32 to advance to the state finals at Buchanan High.
A pre-race decision may undercut those plans as prior to the Masters meet, the group, according to Roberds, decided to forgo the finals and attend this Friday’s graduation ceremonies.
“A tough decision,” Roberds said.
In the relay race, Bruks ran the first leg in second behind Sheldon’s Steven Edwards. But Monterey Trail sped past Ponderosa for second place during the second leg of the race. Roberds passed Del Oro’s Jonathon Tuttle on the final leg and sprinted toward the finish line for the finish.
“We’ve been working hard all season,” said Roberds who was greeted across the finish line by Culver, Hammitt and Bruks. “Honestly, I owe it to my team.”
Ponderosa’s decision means that fourth-place finisher Del Oro will go to Clovis as the alternate.
