RANCHO CORDOVA — Christian Canepa and Austin Tibbs scored two touchdowns each for Ponderosa which beat Cordova, 45-8, Friday at Lancer Stadium in nonleague action.
Canepa scored his first touchdown on a 33-yard run with 11:51 left in the second quarter followed by his second touchdown (15-yard run) which gave the Bruins a 28-0 lead. He rushed 12 times for 104 yards.
“I was playing a lot more at tailback and I liked it,” Canepa said.
Ponderosa head coach Jason Tenner added, “Christian is a Z-back for us, fly back and sometimes slot. He’s a big part of the wheel.”
In between Canepa’s touchdowns, Bruin tight end Jeff Camilli scored on a 1-yard run up the middle.
Ponderosa’s defense forced Cordova’s offense three-and-out in six of seven possessions in the first half. The Lancers had three total offensive yards in the first quarter, 61 in the first half. The Bruins’ offense had 261 total offensive yards in the first half that included halfback Matt McBride and Canepa rushing for a combined 103 yards.
The Bruins fumbled three times in Lancer territory and lost two but Cordova failed to capitalize. Andrew Olson intercepted a pass from Lancer quarterback Zack Tapia to end the first quarter.
“We started playing better football and obviously came out with a win,” Tenner said.
Curtis Goldsmith, perfect in all of his extra-point attempts, booted a 23-yard field goal with 9:35 left in the third quarter to give the Bruins a 31-0 lead. Tibbs scored on a nine-yard run with 6:36 left to add another seven to the scoreboard.
Cordova scored its only touchdown with 2:42 left in the third quarter when tight end Marcus Libero hauled in a 57-yard pass from Tapia. Tibbs crossed the plane on a 1-yard run with 8:17 left to complete the scoring.
Ponderosa’s Josh Bist scooped up the one of the Bruins’ fumbles and raced 4 yards for the game’s first touchdown.
The Ponderosa junior varsity squad also improved to 2-0 with a 29-22 victory over Cordova.
