The California Academy of Baseball and El Dorado Post 119 split a doubleheader Saturday: host CAB won behind its offense and El Dorado with pitching.
The opener at El Dorado High School saw Zach Culp bash out four hits to drive in three runs and Matt Smith hit a home run in a 10-5 CAB win while RJ Blake scattered six hits over six innings as El Dorado took the nightcap 6-1.
The two squads play twice more this coming Saturday at Union Mine.
In the first game, Culp tripled in first inning and scored on Louis Merlo’s ground out. Smith singled and after a walk Lucas Fuller’s catch got Post 119 out of the inning.
Brendan Hunter’s RBI single and Blake’s sacrifice fly put El Dorado up 2-1 and it was 3-all after Smith drilled a ball over the right-center field fence.
Post 119 starter Tim Salemi battled but a 7-run fourth inning let CAB break it open. Culp singled twice in the inning, the second driving in two runs. After an intentional walk, Kevin Morrison also delivered two with a first-pitch single.
Blake’s RBI double got one back in the sixth for El Dorado. Post 119 threatened to come all the way back in the seventh but with the bases loaded and a run already in, CAB turned a triple play to end it.
Smith and Morrison each had multiple hits and Garrett Scalero doubled for CAB while Austin Rigsby went 3-for-4 to lead El Dorado.
Blake picked up his second win of the week in Saturday’s second game. CAB’s Nick Bonniksen pitched well (five innings, 7 strikeouts, two runs) but late mistakes to the tune of four unearned runs cost the hosts.
Rigsby added another two hits and Asher Hammargren hit a two-run single for Post 119. Brown’s steal of home was the eventual winning run.
