EL DORADO — Sean Gregg has been competing in 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter races for the El Dorado High boys track team this season.
But in a tri-Sierra Valley Conference dual meet against Union Mine and Galt on Wednesday afternoon at the Diamondbacks’ football field, Gregg competed only in the 800 and 1,600 races. He placed in the top three of both races. Gregg was first in the 1,600 with a time of 4:41.36 and second in the 800.
“It was more of a workout day,” said Gregg of the 800. “I’m not trying go to for an excellent time.”
Gregg helped El Dorado post a 126-9 win over Union Mine and 131-2 over Galt in the Diamondbacks’ last home dual meet of the season. In the girls meet, El Dorado also swept with a 97-38 win over Union Mine and 128-5 victory over Galt.
El Dorado, Union Mine and Galt will join the rest of the Sierra Valley Conference schools at the conference’s trials and finals that will be held at El Dorado on Tuesday, May 7 and Thursday, May 9. Gregg is looking for a stronger performance in his three events that will carry over into the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Sub-Section meet.
“I’ve improved quite a bit,” Gregg said. “I think basketball helped me out (Gregg played guard on the El Dorado boys basketball team this past winter season). I haven’t had my best race yet. The best is yet to come.”
The Cougars won every event in the varsity boys and girls events against their intra-county rival Diamondbacks and the Warriors.
Charlie Swift has been swift in his recovery from an illness to his performance on Wednesday. The Union Mine High junior took third place in the shot put with a toss of 41 feet, 8 inches.
“I started off good, then I got sick and lost all of my strength,” Swift said. “I started lifting (weights) a lot and got better. The first league meets, I’ve been third, second and first. I’m getting better.
Union Mine head coach Mark Indgjer has 42 students out for the boys and girls track teams this spring, including those on the frosh/soph boys squad.
“Those who are showing up and putting in a great effort,” Indgjer said. “We’re trying to stay competitive.”
In the frosh/soph boys races, El Dorado swept Union Mine, 87-49 and Galt, 121-11.
