WEST SACRAMENTO — Four El Dorado High wrestlers, plus two Union Mine grapplers, left River City High’s gym as champions Saturday at the Sierra Valley Conference league championships.

Marcus Douglas (132-pounds), Jeremiah Romero (152), Alex LeBaron (182) and Zachary Brazell (heavyweights) all won their respective weight classes. The Diamondbacks’ Hunter Cannon (170) led, then fell behind before he rallied for a 9-6 decision.

Douglas, a junior, won by injury default.

In the only intra-county match-up in the finals, Romero competed against Union Mine’s Dillon Abel-Smith. Romero jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. But Abel-Smith rallied toward the end of the period to tie the match at 2-all. Before the period ended, Romero recorded an escape point for a slim 3-2 lead.

The two grapplers battled to a 4-all tie in the second period. Then Romero rolled Abel-Smith over to record the pin with 1:22 left in the match for the title.

“It was great to see him win the championship as a senior,” El Dorado head coach Robert Hart said.

Cannon led 4-2 toward the end of the first period over Liberty Ranch’s Jason Medlock of their title match. But Medlock recorded two escapes and a reversal to take a 6-5 lead in the second period. Cannon, also a senior, rallied for four points in the third period that included a takedown and reversal, with the latter coming 30 seconds left in the match that determined the final score and win.

Brazell also won his match by a 9-3 decision. The sophomore led the entire match.

LeBaron was tied at 0-0 before he pinned Galt’s Garrett Blackwell in the second period, with 1:10 left.

Willy Gadow also competed in the finals for the Cougars. He lost 7-2 in his match for a second place finish. Union Mine’s Christian Beck (145) also wrestled in the finals, but fell 6-0.

El Dorado’s Nathaniel Erskine (138), took third place. Union Mine wrestlers advancing are Cameron Cathey (126), third place; and Sean Berry (132), third place. Chris Lee (120) took third and also advances.

The top four grapplers in each weight class advance to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Divisional IV tournament that will be held Friday and Saturday at Vista del Lago. The Sierra Valley Conference schools will compete against the Valley Oak League and the Western Athletic Conference grapplers.
