Masters Meet draws 23 from area

A combined 23 El Dorado County high school wrestlers make the trek to Stockton today in their quest to earn a trip to Southern California and the state finals.

No, not Disneyland.

The grapplers hope to finish strong in their weight classes at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Wrestling Championships at the Stockton Arena. Action begins today at 9 a.m. and Saturday. The top seven grapplers in their weight classes earn a berth to the CIF State Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield on March 2-3.

Ten Ponderosa wrestlers join Oak Ridge, which also sends 10; two from Golden Sierra; and one from El Dorado to the tournament in Stockton.

Representing Ponderosa are: Jimmy Scarr (128-pounds), Colin Hustrulid (134), Christian Canepa (140), Tyler Shamblin (147), Trae Providence (154), Joshua Ferry (160), Nick Troquato (184), Kyle Jennings (195), Henry Sharoyan (222) and Jeff Camilli (287).

Scarr, Providence, Troquato and Camilli won their weight classes at last weekend’s Divisional I-A meet at Pitman of Turlock.

“Everyone is hoping to get to state,” said Camilli last weekend.

Oak Ridge representatives are Josh Pluke (108), Ryan Redhair (134), Brandon Claiborne (140), Kevan Cryan (154), Ali Atebar (160), Keaton Subjeck (172), Zach Claiborne (184), Bishane Segal (197), Sherman McVey (222) and Jacob Proul (287). Subjeck was the lone Trojan who won his weight class at the Divisional meet at Pitman High.

Patrick Lewis (120) and Brian Agee (160) represent the Grizzlies. Both were fourth place at the D-V meet at Lindhurst High.

El Dorado sends Alex LeBaron (182), who took fourth place at the section’s Divisional D-V meet at Los Banos last weekend.
