HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILL! — Bill Schultz, one day shy of turning 80 years old, turned back all challengers to win the men's singles competition at the Sonoma Wine Country Seniors Games. Courtey photo

El Dorado County Recorder, Registrar, Director of Veteran’s Affairs and County Clerk Bill Schultz added another accomplishment to his repertoire when he won the Sonoma Wine Country Senior Games men’s singles competition on June 8, the day before his 80th birthday.

“I ‘d seen this tournament advertised but never was able to get to it, “said Schultz.” I told my wife that this is what I wanted to do for my birthday. The guy I beat out for the championship had just turned 50 this March and was about 6’4″  and a very good tennis player. We played the full eight games and I got him frustrated.”

Schultz had to win three matches in the eight man bracket to reach first place and he also took medals in men’s and mixed doubles at the two day event held in Santa Rosa.

“I played the oldest participant, a 92 year old man, too. He was all over everything. He was amazing,” said Schultz. “He’s my hero.”

Schultz started playing tennis at age 68 and plays about three times a week at the Millennium Sports Club in Cameron Park. The spin he puts on the ball is a challenge to return and many a player claims to have been “Schultzed.”

“I believe tenacity, devious spins and placement enabled me to win,” said Schultz. “The whole tournament was exciting for me …what a birthday present!”
