Softball: Diamondbacks fall in final inning

STOCKTON — All Union Mine needed was one more out to advance to the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV softball playoffs at Arnaiz Stadium Thursday.

But Ceres’ two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning for the 2-1 victory eliminated the Diamondbacks, who led 1-0 entering the frame.

“We could’ve put the game away a lot sooner,” Union Mine head coach Rob Diggle said. “We left the bases loaded twice.”

In the second, Laura Dager walked, Beth Hammer singled and Jessica Dager bunted to load the bases  but the ‘Dogs threw out Laura at the plate on a fielder’s choice and a strikeout ended the threat.

Jessica walked to start the top of the fourth inning. Miah Linson also reached and Brianna Hall walked before a double play ended another D’back scoring opportunity.

“We didn’t execute when we had them on the ropes,” Diggle said.

Union Mine scored its lone run in the top of the third when Calista Almer beat out a bunt single and scored on Madelynn Heape’s single. The Lady D’backs finished with five hits in the game.
