SHINGLE SPRINGS — A successful outing for both Oak Ridge and host Ponderosa at Saturday’s Delta River League championships.
At stake was advancement to next week’s Divisionals. Of the 26 varsity Bruins and Trojans who took to the mat, all but one moves on.
Oak Ridge had three champions in Josh Ploke (106 pounds), Brandon Claiborne (138) and James Portilla (170) while Ponderosa had two in Trae Providence (160) and Nathaniel Moody (HWT) who squeezed by 1-0 in his title bout to end the afternoon.
Folsom, with six individual champions, outpointed the field to collect 258 points and win the league banner. The Bruins, third coming in, ended up tying the Trojans for second place. Saturday, Ponderosa garnered 217 points and Oak Ridge had 197.5.
“We got 13 through which was the goal. The kids wrestled well — I was happy with their performance,” Bruins coach Tyson Escobar said. “Because our league is so tough, it’s harder to advance from here than it will be at Divisionals.”
The Trojans won both head-to-head title bouts with the Bruins. It started with Ploke who pulled away in the third period for a 11-5 decision over Austin Ward and ended with Portilla who squeaked out a 4-2 win over TJ Shamblin.
Claiborne won comfortably, controlling Folsom’s Jason Bergquist for the 11-2 major decision. Providence’s match was tighter, a 3-1 decision of Bulldog Connor Watson.
“It was a good day for Oak Ridge, we wrestled 13 and advanced 12,” Troy coach Casey Rhyan said.
