CITRUS HEIGHTS — Saturday the Dry Diggins Dolphins came to win and win they did.
In Citrus Heights at the Rusch Park pool, the Dolphins outscored every team, winning the Valley Foothill Competitive Aquatic League title for the first time in several years — and in only the team’s second year as a parent-run organization.
The Dolphins finished with 2012.5 points, followed by the Auburn Robalos with 1,359, the Orangevale Tigersharks with 1,077.5, and the Cordova Blue Marlins with 948. The Dolphins were undefeated in regular season dual meets and put an exclamation point on the season with their dominating showing at “champs.”
“I knew the team was going to perform well by how our warmups went,” Dolphin coach Kristen Stumbaugh said. “The swimmers were sharp, their team spirit was high and they were focused.
“The team swam great, showed the best sportsmanship and team spirit in the league, worked as a team, and together brought home the 2011 VFCAL championship — a wonderful way to close out an undefeated season.”
Stumbaugh and a group of dedicated Dolphin parents banded together after the Placerville Parks and Recreation Department’s budget problems two summers ago forced it to cut ties with the swim team.
With the backing of sponsors and caring people in Placerville who wanted to maintain the Dolphins’ longtime tradition, the team is flourishing.
“Dolphins are about teamwork,” Stumbaugh added. “We had a slogan all season inspired by our team abbreviation: Dedication, Determination and Desire. It’s fun to win and more special because your teammates all believed in each other. This championship is well deserved by each Dolphin swimmer.
“I could not be prouder. It is difficult to maintain an undefeated season. The swimmers worked hard, the parent support was awesome, our coaches motivated all day, and the results were well deserved.
“It was truly was an awesome season. The fun we have each day and the positive environment on deck make the Dolphins a family.”
