Believe it or not — the 2013 high school football season is around the corner.
El Dorado, Golden Sierra, Oak Ridge, Ponderosa and Union Mine football teams have been lifting weights since January. In addition, players from all five El Dorado County high schools have been taking part in 7-on-7 passing games and full-contact camps.
All five teams will have Week 0 games on Friday, Aug. 30. El Dorado will play at South Tahoe, Golden Sierra will host Capital Christian of Sacramento, Oak Ridge will entertain Vista del Lago of Folsom, Ponderosa will also be at home against Natomas and Union Mine makes the trek to Sacramento to play at El Camino.
El Dorado plays a rare Saturday afternoon game — Sept. 14 — at Brookside Christian of Stockton, which plays most of its home games at Lincoln High. Then the Cougars play on Thursday Sept. 19 against McClatchy at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento.
Golden Sierra, last year’s Sierra Delta League champions, rekindles its rivalry with Mother Lode League champion Argonaut at the Grizzlies’ field on Friday, Sept. 6. The Grizzlies play a rare Saturday game — Sept. 14 — at Rio Americano of Sacramento.
Oak Ridge, the Sac-Joaquin Section’s Division I runner-ups that is expected to reload and battle in the tough Delta River League, will play at Franklin of Elk Grove in a non-league game on Friday, Sept. 13. A week later, the Trojans are back on the road again to Sacramento to play at Grant.
Ponderosa moves its game against Natomas to Week 0 this season. Last season, Ponderosa beat Natomas, 60-13, in Week 4. The Bruins have only two home games in pre-season, but three Delta River League home games that includes Oak Ridge on Friday, Oct. 25.
Union Mine and Ponderosa will play each other in an intra-county and non-league game at the Diamondbacks’ field on Friday, Sept. 20. Union Mine will play three consecutive Sierra Valley Conference home games — Liberty Ranch, Galt and intra-county rival El Dorado — in October.
In upcoming weeks, plan on reading more about the five county high school football teams in the Mountain Democrat.
