SACRAMENTO — American River Futbol Club’s Freedom ’98 girls’ soccer team placed first in their own ARFC Independence Cup early last month at the Cherry Island Soccer Complex.
While the defense of goalkeepers Alexa Gisin and Shannon Fuchs along with defensive backs Riley West, Taryn Perez, Megan and Alexa Gisin led the way, the offense proved equally strong.
Gabriella O’Connor, Natalie Cowlishaw and Britney Johnson scored in a 3-2 win over Yuba Sutter FC; Cowlishaw’s two goals and two assists off corners for two Jaycie Schenone headers spelled a 4-1 defeat for FC Elk Grove’s ‘99 Orange.
In game No. 3, an 8-0 victory over FC Elk Grove’s Renegades, goals were scored by O’Connor (2), Madison Jana, Sarah Kelly (2) Cowlishaw, Angelica Huettl and Hannah Lewandowski.
In the finals, Freedom ’98 faced its new sister team, also Freedom ’98 for a competitive game but Cowlishaw and Kelly found the back of the net for the 2-nil victory.
