ELK GROVE — The under 14 Prospector Galaxy soccer team took the championship trophy at the Elk Grove Sun Stroke Classic. Overall the team was 4-0, averaging five goals and surrendering none.
The team was greeted in Elk Grove with windy and cool weather for an August weekend, but that didn’t stop it from coming out strong and defeating the Sacramento Soccer Alliance Vibes 4-0 behind some strong defense led by Seth Wilmoth and Patrick Hickey and great finishing by Kris Charron on top who knocked in all four goals.
The afternoon contest saw even more wind and the threat of thunderstorms as the Galaxy went up against the Sierra Gold Scorpions. This match was back and forth until the great middle play of Troy Whitfield, Tanner Smith and Connor Whalen opened up the outside of the field for Kyle Gillaspy to hit a great cross to Charron for the finish.
Galaxy added on with a penalty kick goal drilled in by Andoni Oakes to end the first half. They added one more goal in the second on a strong finish after a header by Mitchell Massera. The stellar defense continued to stop any attacks on goal and Bryce Templeton stepped up at keeper to make a couple spectacular saves to keep this game to a 3-0 shutout.
The next game saw some of the great play by the Galaxy by closing out Elk Grove Rangers 8-0 to take them to the championship game against the Lodi Earthquakes. Posting a 5-0 victory, the Galaxy came out strong and never let up on the attacks, keeping the ball out of the hands of our keeper the entire game. Kyle Charron, Shane Marshall and Mitchell Massera dominated on the outside midfield positions continually for opportunities to put some shots in.
Noah Morton, Noah Warfield and Gillaspy provided key defensive plays and Jordan Humphrey helped control the ball up top for many players to finish with the win.
