EL DORADO HILLS — Oak Ridge volleyball coach Becky Potter had a beaming smile on her face Saturday afternoon inside the Trojan gym after a 4-1 overall record at the 24th annual Christine Craft Memorial Tournament.
In its first match in the Gold bracket, Oak Ridge beat Monterey Trail in straight sets before losing to El Camino in single-elimination play. In pool play, the Trojans won six of seven sets against Bella Vista, Colfax and Bradshaw Christian.
“I think winning pool was big for us in our own tournament,” Potter said. ”I think a 4-1 overall on the day is pretty good.”
Potter was pleased with the performance of setter Tara McDermott, one of the Trojan team captains.
“She was very solid in her setting choices,” Potter said. “Her leadership has been very impressive this season. She’s taken on the role of team captain very well.”
El Dorado and Golden Sierra also competed. The Cougars posted a 1-2 record in pool play, defeating Will C. Wood of Vacaville 2-0 before falling to Rio Americano and Monterey Trail. In the bronze playoff division at Vista del Lago, El Dorado turned back Golden Sierra in three sets, 24-26, 25-21, 15-13 but lost to Roseville 15-25 and 13-25.
“There are a lot of talented teams here,” Potter said.
Golden Sierra had a rough pool, winning only one game against Roseville, Christian Brothers and Davis in going 0-3. In the afternoon bracket, Golden Sierra beat Woodland Christian before playing El Dorado.
The tournament is in memory of Christine Craft, who played in the Oak Ridge volleyball program in the 1980s. Funds from the tourney goes toward a $1,000 scholarship is given to a Lady Trojans senior on the volleyball team.
