Golden Sierra 2nd at league meet

SACRAMENTO — The Golden Sierra Cross Country teams opened Sierra Delta League competition with second place finishes Wednesday at Renfree Field.

The fledging league in its third year showed marked improvement as five of the six schools competing had at least one team in either the Varsity or JV races.

For the first time in three years, the Grizzlies’ decorated girls cross country program suffered its first loss in league competition. The final results in the team scoring placed Bradshaw Christian on top with 36, Golden Sierra 48, San Juan 56 and Highlands, 76.

Highlands’ freshman Alicia Romo was the surprise winner timed in 22:17 to finish 13 seconds ahead of Grizzly Gabby Martinez.

“Gabby just started running about two weeks ago and should improve as the season progresses,” Golden Sierra coach Mike Brown said.

The boys race saw Scots’ senior Alex Siginur win in commanding fashion, 44 seconds ahead of his nearest pursuer and teammate Ruslan Suleimanov. Highlands bested Golden Sierra by a 22-43 score, and San Juan finished third with 51 points.

Golden Sierra’s young team was led by sophomore Hunter Hughes with a third place finish over the 5,000 meter course in a time of 18:34.
