GARDEN VALLEY — Ten seniors on the Golden Sierra High boys soccer team won’t soon forget their final home game of the season. Against San Juan Thursday in a Sierra Delta League match, the Grizzlies (8-10-3, 5-4-3) scored two goals in the second half for a 3-0 win over the Spartans on Senior Day.
Despite the victory, Golden Sierra fell shy of qualifying for the Sac-Joaquin Section D-VI playoffs.
“One game short. We needed (Rio Vista) to play Vacaville Christian today,” said Griz coach Johnn deGraef after explaining Rio Vista has forfeited the rest of its season due to ineligible players.
In Thursday’s matchup, both the Grizzlies and Spartans were aggressive with their hustle on both sides of the ball but Golden Sierra found an opening when striker Matt Smith scored the Grizzlies’ first goal in the 49th minute with an assist from midfielder Kyle Shiba.
“We really turned it up at the right time,” deGraef said.
Smith scored Golden Sierra’s second goal in the second half in the 60th minute to make it 2-0. Defender Cory Danielson-McKeague scored the final goal with a minute left in the game, with an assist from Kell Bowman.
Smith had 10 shots on goal in the game, and the Grizzlies finished with 21. Goalie Shane Doyan had two saves for the Grizzlies. Braiden Swansen had eight steals and Spencer Cortright had five.
Smith, Danielson-McKeague, Bowman, Cortright and Doyan joined Jonny O’Brien, Zack Haughman, Brian See, Ryan Little and Taggert Magnuson in being recognized on Senior Day.
