GARDEN VALLEY — Host Golden Sierra and Rio Vista played to a 1-1 deadlock Thursday afternoon to open the second round of Sierra Delta League soccer action.
The tie moved the Grizzlies’ league record at 5-0-2. Golden Sierra won the first match between the teams 1-0.
The Griz controlled the first half and attacked behind the efforts of Erin Anderson, Mya Leaird, Rachel Goodcase, Taylor Gleason, Madison Penley, Kaleigh Brothers and Melissa Comstock.
Anderson, in what will likely be her luckiest goal of the season, jumped on an inadvertent kick upfield that went to the middle and returned a routine shot that inexplicably bounced through the grasp of the Rams’ keeper.
Golden Sierra’s defense of Rachel Hansen, Amanda Dukes, Jenna Pendzinski, Alix Nordby and goalie Kayla Anderson (15 saves) were up to the task but with 23 minutes left last year’s Sierra Delta League MVP, Hannah Dukes, put a perfect arching shot on goal from the right that drifted over Anderson inside the top left corner.
The Grizzlies pressured in the last five minutes with multiple corners, the last that Comstock delivered to Gleason at the far post. Gleason made the connection but a clutch defensive clear by a Rio Vista defender denied the hosts.
