GALT — Quarterback Nick Bonniksen passed for 173 yards and wide receiver Zachary Culp had nine receptions for 96 yards but it wasn’t enough for El Dorado which lost to Liberty Ranch 63-7 Saturday night at Erv Hatzenbuhler Field.
The Cougars’ lone touchdown came in the second quarter when Derek Delfino hauled in a 4-yard pass from Bonniksen. Overall, mistakes on offense and defense was the downfall for the high-spirited Cougars (2-6, 0-4).
“Our mind-set is if we play our style of football, we can play with anyone,” said El Dorado head coach Joe Volek. “Our kids want to play our brand of football.”
Liberty Ranch scored three more touchdowns in the second quarter for a 49-7 lead at halftime. The Hawks scored a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters to account for the final scores.
Delfino had 10 carries for 91 yards to lead the Cougars’ rushing game. Defensive back Jeremiah Romero had 10 tackles in the game, and teammates Daniel Rivera, Santiago Arroyos and Juan Vargas had a sack each.
Friday, El Dorado hosts intra-county rival Union Mine.
“Union Mine is always well-coached by Dave Johnson and his staff,” said Volek, who coached for Johnson in the 2000s before coming to El Dorado. “He, single handily, built that program. They play for four quarters.”
