HZ: This is goodbye

Jerry Heinzer

The time has come.

The time has come to pack my things and move on.

With great regret and a heavy heart, I’m leaving the Mountain Democrat here at 1360 Broadway, my workplace for the past 13 years.

I started here in this building a staff writer and leave as the Sports Editor.

It’s been a blast — something I’ll never forget.

While I’ll miss coming here to work, the nature of my job history is very transitory. Here for a time, there for some more and then someplace else.

I started here in 2000 as someone trying to rejoin the work force. I’d just lost my dad, was in transition from a corporate world that had dominated my existence and one objective I wanted was to eliminate commuting from my life all together.

After a trial period, the Democrat took a chance on me and we’ve been together since.

But as I’ve come to know, nothing in the world of time cards, break rooms and deadlines lasts forever.

It’s a pleasure covering all our fine athletes and there’s been some good ones over the years from state champions to several who turned pro.

In traveling on the road for playoff games and hanging on every intense moment in victories and defeats — I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

Cleaning out the desk brings back a flood of memories. From the back issues of teams and athletes that went to battle to the current ones still in the game. Things tucked in drawers from long ago … connected to some moment in time.

Now it all sits in a box, looking out of place, in my garage until a time I’ll look at it again and reminisce some more. Some items may be back in circulation, other won’t.

Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to win some awards but those too are down and collecting dust. Maybe a future relic to show grandkids.

As a gaze at my now-empty cubicle, I realize how much I’ll miss this place …

… but look forward to inhabiting my new spot at the Democrat’s new digs on Ray Lawyer Drive — an even shorter commute!

Didn’t think you could get rid of me that easily did you?
