Crosstown rivals square-off Saturday in the junior football programs when the Union Mine Jr. Rattlers host the El Dorado Jr. Cougars at Union Mine High.
Just like their high school counterparts, the Jr. Rattlers and Cougars share the same division.
These local matchups have been exciting over the last couple of years. As feeder programs to their respective high schools, fans get a glimpse of what future varsity rosters might look like.
The junior programs feature four age groups: Jr. Pee Wee, age 8 years and under; Pee Wee, ages 9-10; Jr. Midgets, ages 11-12; and Midgets, ages 13-14 (not yet in high school).
With a stong emphasis on academics, these tackle football programs promote good student athletes by enforcing a minimum GPA standard that promotes academics before football.
As members of the Sacramento Youth Football league “SYF,” these young athletes compete against teams all over the greater Sacramento area.
Saturday’s games between the Jr. Cougars and Jr. Rattlers is the next chapter in this crosstown rivalry. Due to their close proximity, fans tend to cheer both teams.
The cheerleaders, who practice just as much as the players, will be on hand to lead us in spirit and praise for the players on the field.
Come out and enjoy some great football. Game times are: 10 a.m. for the Jr. Pee Wees; noon for the Pee Wees; 2 p.m. for the Jr. Midgets; and 4 p.m. for the Midgets. Gate fees are $4 for age 12 and older, $2 for seniors and kids age 11 and under are free. Gate opens at Union Mine’s Carl Fickle Stadium at 9 a.m. For information please contact Ron Cannon at President@Jrrattlers.org
