SHINGLE SPRINGS — Defense was strong for most of the second half Friday for the host Ponderosa High girls basketball team against Cordova.
After holding the Lancers to two points in the third quarter, the Bruins led by six going to the fourth before Cordova pulled out the narrow 39-38 win.
Ponderosa (6-5) led 38-31 with 1:13 left after Bruin guard Ashlyn Zentner hit two free throws but Cordova (2-8) quickly narrowed the gap with consecutive three-pointers.
“The girls had their hands up, and they were ready (in the third quarter),” Ponderosa head coach Noel O’Donnell said. “They were tenacious on defense. I was proud of the girls because I thought they played real hard in the second half.”
A baseline jumper with 32 seconds left gave the Lancers the win. The Bruins took two shots in the remaining time but missed both.
“We executed our last second play, and just missed by a bit,” O’Donnell said.
Cordova led 17-12 at halftime but Ponderosa adjusted its offense and hit the glass behind Danielle Craft, Danielle Becker and Madison Clayton. Craft’s trey from the top of the key with 1:26 left in the third gave Ponderosa a 22-19 lead.
“We had to make some offensive adjustments because in the first half because nothing was working,” O’Donnell said.
Craft had a double-double for the Bruins with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Clayton had 10 points and six of the Bruins’ 14 assists. Zentner had six points and Sophia George four. Cordova’s Midori Mekata led her team with 11 points.
