El DORADO — In its Sierra Valley Conference opener Tuesday, the Union Mine High softball team had nine hits in its 4-1 win over Liberty Ranch.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Diamondbacks’ Larissa Garcia singled and moved to second base on Carley Stevens’ bunt single. Calista Almer drove in Garcia on an error to make it 2-1 and Union Mine (1-0, 3-1-1) scored again in the inning when Madelynn Heape singled to drive in Stevens.
“I thought we hit the ball a lot better today,” Union Mine head coach Rob Diggle said.
Union Mine, the defending conference champions, scored its final run in the bottom of the third when Laura Dager doubled and scored on Miah Linson’s single.
The D’backs threatened in the fourth inning when Linson had a bunt single and Jessica Dager (2-for-3) singled. But after a double steal, Liberty Ranch recorded the third out to end the threat.
On defense, the D’backs’ outfield of Linson, Mickaela Robertson and Stevens recorded outs on deep fly balls. On one, Linson made a diving catch.
“I thought we played good defense,” Diggle said.
Liberty Ranch scored its lone run in the top of the second inning and the Hawks loaded the bases on a single, fielder’s choice and walk in the top of the seventh inning before Union Mine ended the game when Linson caught a deep fly ball for the third out.
