EL DORADO — Vista del Lago went on a 9-2 run in the final minutes, capped off with two game-winning free throws with no time left, to erase a six-point deficit and clip host Union Mine 64-62 on Senior Night in a Sierra Valley Conference boys basketball game.
Prior to the contest, Scott McIntyre, Daniel Saich, Sam Fluery and Alec Vaughn were honored by the program.
Vaughn sank 1-of-2 free throws with 2:56 left to cushion the D’backs’ lead to 60-54 but Eagle Jake Duenkel cut that in half with a three-pointer. After teammate Drew McPherson made 2-of-2 free throws to cut Union Mine’s lead to 60-59, McIntyre responded with two free throws with 37.9 seconds for a 62-59 advantage.
Duenkel (28 points) hit another three with 21 seconds left to tie the score and was later fouled with no time left — calmly sank the game-winning shots.
“At the end of the quarter, we wanted to run the clock down (for overtime),” Verbitsky said. “But they battled back when we had the lead.”
Union Mine made 17-of-23 free throws in the game. Vista sank 12-of-18.
“We shot the ball well from the free throw line,” Verbitsky said.
Union Mine was hot from behind the arc in the first half, making nine treys. In the second half, Union Mine made only one.
Its treys in the second quarter (five) helped Union Mine built a 44-30 halftime lead. The Eagles soared toward the end of the quarter to tie the game at 49-all going into the fourth quarter.
Three players scored in double digits for Union Mine; Vaughn finished with 18 points and McIntyre and Saich scored 15 each. Fluery had nine, guard Austin Russell, three, and guard Sean Verbitsky, two.
