Trojan girls fly past Eagles

EL DORADO HILLS — Marissa Ribeiro’s hat trick sparked an offensive explosion for the Oak Ridge High soccer team Wednesday and the Lady Trojans, behind a season-high number of goals, routed visiting Pleasant Grove 5-zip.

Oak Ridge, which improved to 2-2-3 in the Delta River League, carried a 1-0 lead to the second half. Ribeiro scored twice more, Tiffani Reimers headed one in off a Carisa Rivers corner kick and Cheyanne Gold struck gold to complete the scoring.

“We played relaxed and were patient with our passes which was key to scoring the goals,” Troy coach Henry Reis said. “We tied Pleasant grove 1-1 the first time but they’re missing kids, have injuries and have slipped a bit. They play on grass so they don’t play well on turf — you’d think it’d be the other way around.”

Ribeiro played well period. The freshman was on the receiving end of a Lauren Whited-Julia Crawford link with Crawford’s pass prompting Eagle goalie Hayley Summers to challenge. Ribeiro faked by Summers for the easy cut back on the empty net.

“I feel we worked together as a team today, were positive and played off each other really well,” Ribeiro said.

Pleasant Grove switched out Summers with a replacement for the second half and Oak Ridge went to town. Alex Ghilarducci’s corner run and cross over a defender found Ribeiro for a head-flick and 2-0 advantage; touches from Olivia Frace, Cori Davis and Crawford ended with Gold returning her own blocked shot into the upper right corner; and Reimers, up from her defensive spot, floated around the box to time Rivers’ corner for a header that caught the bottom of the crossbar and went in for a 4-0 lead.

“It feels good but also bad that it took this long in the season to score this many goals,” Reimers said.

Three Trojans seniors: Haley Karickhoff, an injured Taylor Camin and goalie Ashley Pearl were honored at halftime for their contributions to the Trojan program.

Oak Ridge also had strong midfield play from Jacqueline Hitchings, Caira Woo, Amanda Stickelmann and Haley VanOverbeek. Karickhoff put off the thought that her next school, Point Loma, is by the ocean long enough to anchor the defense of Crawford, Davis, Paige Okazaki and Reimers in front of Pearl.
