EL DORADO HILLS — Two hits in the top of the first inning gave Ponderosa momentum against Oak Ridge in Monday’s intra county and Delta River League baseball game.

Brett Pankow and Shea McLinden smacked singles to right field. Add in a walk to Parker Wright, and the Bruins loaded the bases. But Oak Ridge pitcher Austin Root recorded two of his six strikeouts in the frame, and the Trojans’ bats had 13 hits for a 13-0 win.

The game was called after five innings because of the mercy rule.

“We had them on the ropes,” Ponderosa head coach Robert Taylor said. “We just couldn’t execute. If you get them early, that can help you.”

Root’s mixture of pitches led to the strikeouts. The Bruins (1-9, 5-17) went down in order in the final four innings.

“He had his change-up, and slider, to go along with the fastball,” said Oak Ridge head coach Todd Melton of Root’s pitches.

Oak Ridge (8-2, 13-8) made it 3-0 in the bottom of the inning when Mickey Meinhofer, Tyson Solis and Tanner Ales hit consecutive singles, as Ales’ hit scored Meinhofer. Solis scored on Logan Denholm’s sacrifice fly, and Ales on Kyle Barisone’s double to centerfield.

The Trojans picked up where they left off in the bottom of the second inning for a 6-0 lead. Chris Roppolo (3-for-3, RBI) led off with a double to right field, and Andrew Lackowski walked. Meinhofer (3-for-4, 2 RBIs) singled that drove in Roppolo. Solis (4-for-4, 3 RBIs) poked a double to left field to plate Lackowski. Meinhofer scored on Erik McNeil’s fielder’s choice.

“They believe in themselves,” said Melton of the Trojans’ line-up from lead off to the No. 9 batters. “They are good hitters. We had a couple of balls into the gap, put the ball hard on the ground. I was pleased.”

The Trojans made it 8-0 in the bottom of the third inning highlighted by three singles from Roppolo, Meinhofer and Solis.

Five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning wrapped up the game for Oak Ridge. Jake Hathaway’s double down the third base line, and base hits from Jon Seim, Roppolo and Solis led the way.
