EL DORADO HILLS — The Oak Ridge water polo teams rode into Monday’s matches with McClatchy on different waves — the boys winners of their last four and the girls coming off a one point loss to Granite Bay. The trends continued Monday as the Lady Trojans lost the early match 10-7 before the boys won convincingly, 8-2.
The boys got out to a quick start. After a stellar save from goalie Kasian Strawick, Kyle Bare scored to give Oak Ridge an early lead before Cameron Bullock shook off a McClatchy defender draped on him to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Strawick made two more saves, including a stop on a McClatchy penalty shot to keep the Lions scoreless, and the Oak Ridge offense took advantage. Bryan Cole scored with a powerful shot early into the second, and Kyle Bare converted again with 2:39 left. The Trojans entered the half with a 5-0 advantage after Cole scored on a PK.
Neither team scored for the majority of the third period, but goals by Carson Willms and Bullock put Oak Ridge up 7-0. A bounce shot that evaded Strawick ended the shutout bid but Bryan Bare scored at the 4:43 mark in the fourth quarter and after another McClatchy goal, the Trojans coasted to their fifth straight win.
“It was probably one of our best defensive performances of the year, and our offense was able to put through enough shots to win,” coach Don McCormick said. “ (Strawick)’s done a very good job for us this year, made some great reactions to shots.”
The scoring was more liberal in the girls match. Oak Ridge took an early lead when Cailin Navickas scored off of a turnover but Katie Beale scored twice in quick succession for McClatchy, and Xanthe Plescia scored to give the Lions a 3-1 lead. Morgan Jones scored from the middle of the pool at the buzzer to get Oak Ridge within one at 3-2 at the end of the period. Plescia opened the scoring in the second with a goal and, after Meg Brock scored, the Lions led 5-2 at the half.
Plescia came out in the second half and scored another goal on a fast break. Though the Lions held a four-goal lead the Trojans didn’t waivered as Ally Greer scored on a penalty shot and Danielle Stein scored to get Oak Ridge within two before McClatchy scored again to bolster its cushion to 7-4 at the end of the third period.
Stefanie Polivka scored 30 seconds into the fourth period and after Julia Glick scored for the Lions, Navickas immediately answered with her second goal. Down by two, Oak Ridge had an opportunity to complete the comeback but Beale scored with 2:42 left to ice the game. Greer scored again for the Trojans, but in vain.
“There were some good things from today, but it’s the little parts that we weren’t succeeding in that cost us,” coach Tim McCormick said.
