SHINGLE SPRINGS — Ponderosa High’s varsity swim program hosted Oak Ridge Wednesday for a Delta River League and intra-county showdown.

The visiting Trojans led the way in most categories, as the boys beat the Bruins 139-50, while the Lady Trojans downed their counterparts 119.5-69.5.

Oak Ridge’s boys and girls seized victory in all relay events, dominating the 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free relays. In the girls competition, Mefford was a gold medalist in the 200 intermediate medley for Troy, while Garcia took first in the 100 fly and 500 free.

For the boys, Oak Ridge was in control throughout the afternoon. Bryce Mefford took first in the 200 free while Jason Phen won the 200 IM and 100 fly, Kyle Bare found gold in the 50 free, Trevor Dong took first in the 100 free and 100 back, Patrick Tehaney won the 500 free and William Kirk was golden in the 100 breast.

Despite the loss, spirits were high for the Bruins — celebrating senior night as well as stellar individual performances from a few green-clad swimmers. Teammates and supporters celebrated the efforts of Ponderosa seniors Taylor Lehr, Sammi Woo, Torianna Green, Hayden Cooksy, David Chong, Austen Donley, Shelby Lee, Zach Pickett, Sam Rackwitz, Luke Schneider, Parker Traweek, Carlena Bailey, Emily Hoffman, Abigail Morgan and Carissa Willis.

“It’s always great to compete against a talented team like Oak Ridge,” head coach Mike Smith said. “We had some notable swims from Sammi and Taylor. We’re a young team right now — Vaughn Cannedy is a sophomore and Gary Woo is a freshman — we’re looking forward to continuing the development of our program.”

Lehr grabbed gold in the 200 free for Ponderosa, as well as the 100 meter backstroke, while Woo dominated the 50 free for the Bruins.

Ponderosa’s boys diving edged Oak Ridge 7-4 to help cut the deficit, while the girls diving teams split 5.5 points each.
