Pereira, Cameron qualify for NorCal golf championship
STOCKTON — Oak Ridge freshman Charlie Cameron and Ponderosa sophomore Corey Pereira both shot 73 at The Reserve at Spanos Park Monday, earning individual berths in next week's NCGA/Northern California championship at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico.
On a course that plays hard no matter the weather, the two came in 1-over-par behind Turlock's Paul Smith, who shot 69. Will Brink of East Union took the fourth spot after winning a five-way playoff.
Teamwise, Del Oro finished with a 381 to take first, Davis was second with a 382, and Granite Bay grabbed the final spot with a 388.
The Oak Ridge team, one of just six squads out of 14 that shot in the 300s, tied with Christian Brothers in fifth place with a 392. Jesuit, the Delta River League champion, was fourth with a 391, just one stroke lower than the Trojans.
The top three teams move on along with the four individual golfers.
Oak Ridge's Josh Kepplinger posted a 77, Jesse Goldstein had a 78, Reid Edlund finished with a 79, Tyson Tavalero came in with an 85 and Cole Kenny shot 90.
Union Mine senior Kyle Listar missed the cut by two strokes, finishing with a 76. Ponderosa's other individual qualifier, Jeremy Ashburn, carded a 77.
Monday's play will start on the Nos. 1 and 10 tees beginning at 8 a.m. Pairings will be available on the NCGA Website, ncga.org, and the CIF Website, cifstate.org, Thursday.
