SACRAMENTO — Step No.1 toward another winning season, according to Ponderosa High wrestling coach Tyson Escobar, was completed at the Delta River League tournament at Sheldon High.

The Bruins entered Saturday with a 4-1 dual meet league record but topped Folsom, which handed the Bruins their only loss, to claim a share of the league title. The Bruins had 273 points to the Bulldogs’ 249.5. Oak Ridge, which went 3-2 in league dual meets, was third with 230 points.

“We’ve presevered and got better,” said Escobar, “and that was the ultimate goal.”

This is the Bruins’ second Delta River League title in three seasons. In 2012, Folsom won the outright league title.

Ponderosa placed 13 of its 14 grapplers in the top four to advance to next weekend’s Divisional I-A tournament at Pitman of Turlock.

“(This) week is step two,”  Escobar said. “It’s a four-team race between Turlock, Ponderosa, Elk Grove and Folsom. We’re going in and plan on winning it.”

Added Trae Providence, who won the 154-pound title with a 3-0 decision over Folsom’s Connor Watson, “It was a team effort.”

Bruin teammates who also won league titles were Jimmy Scarr (128), Nick Troquato (184) and Kyle Jennings (197).

“I thought I wrestled good today,” said Providence, who had been wrestling 160s. “It’s nice going down (in weight class)

Second-place finishers for Ponderosa were Jacob Gonzales (122), Tyler Shamblin (147), Henry Sharoyan (222) and Jeff Camilli (287). Third-place finishers were Colin Hustrulid (134), Christian Canepa (140), Joshua Ferry (162) and Nathaniel Israel (172). Thomas Holloway (108) earned a birth at the section’s divisional meet with a fourth place finish.

Oak Ridge had two grapplers win their weight classes: Keaton Subjeck (172) and Sherman McVey (222). In second place were: Josh Ploke (108), Brandon Claiborne (140), Ali Atebar (162), Zach Claiborne (184) and Bishane Sagi (197). Jacob Proul (287) brought home a third place finish and in fourth were: Christian Portillo (115), Xavier Liongson (122), Ryan Redhair (134), Corbit Raulston (147) and Kevan Cryan (154).

Trojans head coach Casey Rhyan was pleased with Subjeck’s and Zach Claiborne’s performances in the finals of their championship matches. Claiborne posted a 20-10 win over Folsom’s Devon Nooner and Claiborne lost a close 9-8 decision to Troquato.

“I thought both of those kids wrestled really well,” Rhyan said.
