Ponderosa goes down fighting in loss

SHINGLE SPRINGS — The Ponderosa girls basketball team had reason to feel good about the finish to Friday’s Delta River League game against visiting Pleasant Grove — just not the victory to show for it.

The Lady Bruins had the Eagles on their heels, ending on a 13-0 run, but it didn’t make up for earlier play that had Pleasant Grove well in front of its eventual 51-42 win.

Ponderosa’s press, led by Stacey Godwin, Brooke Sinner and Danielle Becker out front and Maddie Clayton and Tiffany Nesterenko in the back, completely befuddled the Eagles in the fourth quarter. The Bruin quintet outscored Pleasant Grove 19-5 — not enough to overcome a 23-point deficit Ponderosa accumulated over the first three quarters.

“We could have played a whole lot better earlier in the game but we knew we had it in us to come back,” Godwin said. “You can’t afford to make mistakes against a team like that and need to keep the turnovers to a minimum because they will add up.”

The Bruins came in after their big win at St. Francis determined to limit Dejza James who had scored 24 in the teams’ first matchup. For the most part they did although they lost track of her —and the ball — in the second quarter when James got loose for 11 of her game-high 15 points.

Until Nesterenko’s two free throws with 2:54 left in the second, Ashley Beck and Clayton had accounted for all of Ponderosa’s points. The Bruins trailed 19-16 when James and Co. run off 14 straight to go to the locker room up 33-16.

“We just got down a little too much and had to fight and scrap our way back,” Ponderosa coach Noel O’Donnell said. “What happened was that we stopped rebounding and turned the ball over and if you do that it will cost you.”

Ponderosas was cold to open the third until Beck went glass, Sophia George had a putback and Morgan Martinenko buried a three-pointer. Pleasant Grove scored the next six for a 46-23 advantage going to the fourth.

Clayton had seven of her team-high 13 points in the final quarter, Godwin all four of her points, Skinner her three points, Becker her basket and Danielle Craft added a trey as the Bruins frustrated the Eagles to the end.

Beck finished with 10 points.
