El Dorado’s late comeback ends with walk-off

EL DORADO — Brendan McKillop’s line single to left scored Tim Salemi from second base Saturday, giving El Dorado Post 119 an exciting come-from-behind, extra-inning 5-4 victory over visiting Grass Valley at Union Mine High School.

McKillop’s two-out heroics came an inning after El Dorado, down to its last strike, saw Joel Pedretti deliver a clutch two-run single that snuck up the middle to tie Grass Valley.

“The kids did a great job staying patient at the plate and managed to come around at just the right time,” Post 119 coach Brett Robinson said.

Salemi stole second on an attempted pickoff and then raced around as the Grass Valley left-fielder couldn’t make a clean pick-up of McKillop’s smash.

“With two outs I was just trying to find me a cone,” McKillop said of a hitting drill El Dorado does at practice. “I wanted to either go oppo or drive it to left field and got a fastball. We knew we had to come back in the seventh and once we got to extras knew we had the last at bat and had to score.”

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Greg Alloway legged out an infield hit and Salemi drilled a single to left. Grass Valley starter Joe Souza, tough all morning on the Post 119 bats, induced a flyout and strikeout to sit an out away.

With the grill going and a team barbecue awaiting, Matt Gould and El Dorado weren’t ready to chow down just yet as Gould found the gap in right-center for an RBI double. After Brendan Hunter walked, Pedretti, battling to a 2-2 count, bounced his hit through the middle.

Post 119′s first run came with two away in the first as Gould walked, Zach Bartelme singled and Pedretti went the other way to get his team on the board.

Grass Valley roared back with two but McKillop snared a line drive in left and doubled a runner off at second.

Post 119 turned a triple play in the fourth after Grass Valley loaded the bases against El Dorado starter RJ Blake. Gould grabbed a soft liner at short, ran to third for the double-up and fired to Lucas Fuller at second for the other.

Grass Valley tacked on two in the seventh with the help of two Post 119 errors.

Pedretti’s three hits and three RBI led El Dorado. Gould added two hits. Blake went the first five innings and Salemi the final three to get the win
