Second half surge aids Troy

FOLSOM — Four touchdowns in the third quarter helped the Oak Ridge High football team to a 42-6 victory over Vista del Lago Friday night at Prairie City Stadium in the Week 0 opener for both teams.

Leading 14-6 at halftime, the Trojans scored on their first possession in the third quarter as running back Josh Wellman scored on a 9-yard run and Ryan Lamb booted the extra-point.

Cory Gregersen’s fumble recovery set up Jericho Hallare’s 1-yard run to increase his team’s lead to 28-6.

“Our defense played well all night for four straight quarters,” Oak Ridge coach Eric Cavaliere said.

After the Eagles went three-and-out again, quarterback Jason Samuels hit tight end Trent Buenzil on a 12-yard pass for a 35-6 lead. The last touchdown came when Wellman scored his second touchdown on a 46-yard run.

Twice in the second quarter, Vista was in scoring position but hurried passes or scrambles by quarterback Chris Cooper came up short.

“When Vista got into scoring position, they just tighten up and made plays,” Cavaliere said.

Vista head coach Chris Jones felt his team’s defense struggled in the second half.

“I thought we played our tails off on defense (in the first half),” Jones said.

Most of Oak Ridge’s plays on offense in the second half were running plays.

“It starts with those (offensive lineman) up front,” Cavaliere said. “We were able to do that and that makes all the difference.”

Oak Ridge scored two early touchdowns — Samuels’ 28-yard strike to Bradford Buenzil; and Blake Martin’s 25-yard run. Vista scored its lone points on Josh Pfeffer’s 90-yard kickoff return.

In the junior varsity game, Vista del Lago rallied to beat Oak Ridge 15-13 and Troy’s freshmen knocked off the Eagles.
