SANTA CRUZ — The Prospector Soccer Club U11 girls’ competitive team, Sparks, played in the Breakers Cup. At their second tournament of the season, the Sparks girls played with amazing team enthusiasm to narrowly missed taking home the championship.
Starting off at an early morning game, the Sparks came out ready to play against Walnut Creek’s Tsunami. Combining goals by Julin Kennison and Kendel Gisin, and a strong defense, they won their first game 2-0. The Sparks entered their second game against the El Dorado Hills’ Strikers, a team the Sparks plays frequently. Knowing each others games, they played a tough, competitive match resulting in a 2-1 victory for Sparks with Abby Morgado scoring both goals.
On the second day, the girls played their toughest team yet, San Bruno’s Hurricanes. The teams played aggressive and took many shots on goal. Julin Kennison scored early on a penalty kick. Abby Morgado found the back of the net in the second half, finalizing the score at 2-0 advancing them to the championship game.
The Sparks were ready to take on Santa Cruz’s Aptos Tide. Aptos Tide got an early breakaway to score. Not to be discouraged, the Sparks fought relentlessly taking shot after shot on the opposing goalkeeper who had some great saves. The referee called back a Sparks’ goal in the last few minutes, but the girls pressed on. Time eventually ran out and the game with the Tide posting a 1-0 victory.
Sparks goal keeper Juliet Dias, was commended for her never-ending commitment, plus all the Sparks’ players and their coaches in Ryan Smith and Jason Gulbransen.
