Speedway: Topless division one of five tomorrow night

By From page A9 | April 25, 2014

The crowds have been impressive as well as impressed by the amazing action at Placerville Speedway thus far in the 2014 championship racing season, and week No. 4 will be no exception  as five divisions converge at the quarter-mile clay track, three of which bring the banner of totally topless action into the marquee.

Tomorrow night, the Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Car Series make its first visit of the season along with the Bay Cities Racing Association that brings both the traditional Midgets and the Midget Lites as they race wingless in honor of fallen car owner and longtime BCRA supporter Wayne Abright who passed away in February.

Joining the three visiting divisions will be two of Placerville’s regular divisions — the Limited Late Models and Pure Stocks — as they return to the battle for the 2014 Jackson Rancheria Casino track championship.

After his victory two weeks ago, Ray Trimble leads the point standings in the Limited Late Model division. Former champ Matt Micheli trails in second place by just two digits while defending champ Tom Tilford is five points behind. Ryan McDaniel is fourth over Marek Bernert who rounds out the top five.

In the Pure Stock Division, recent winner Scott Grunert is the early point leader with seven point lead over Tim Mack of Diamond Springs. Chris Van Roekel is third followed by Jason Leonard and Rick Grunert.

Complete point standings can be found at For complete standings and further information on the Midgets and Midget Lites visit

The grandstands open at 5 p.m. Saturday with qualifying at 6:30 p.m. Adults are $15, seniors $13, juniors are $12, children $5 and those 5 and under enter for free. Placerville Speedway is located on the El Dorado County Fairgrounds at 100 Placerville Drive.
