Hunting contest

A contest is underway for El Dorado County students aged 12-16 for a 4-night, 3-day pheasant hunt with parent/guardian at R&R Pheasant Hunting Resort ( in Seneca South Dakota, which is one of only a few Cabela’s certified hunting destinations. This is the fourth year that the contest has taken place. The program goal is to tie together academic achievement with the enjoyment of the shooting sports, much as school sponsored sports are tied together with required grade averages for participation.  Contest entry consists of a Xerox copy of an official report card with each grade equal to or higher than “B” for that reporting period.  One entry is allowed for each report card grading period, and student’s phone number must appear on entry. Deadline for receipt of entries is June 12, 2013.  The hunt will take place during September 2013. Contest rules, procedures, and entry boxes are available at Big Horn Gun Shop (530-642-1892) and Newtown Firearms (530-626-9945). Students unable to visit one of the entry box locations can mail their entries to Big Horn Gun Shop, 6271 Pleasant Valley Road, El Dorado, CA 95623. Deadline for receipt of mailed entries is also June 12, 2013.

Adult coed soccer

This coed 7 vs. 7 league plays on Wednesday nights at the El Dorado Hills Promontory Community Park’s synthetic field. The next league season will run Nov. 7-Jan. 9, 2013. The fee is $652 per team which includes playoffs for the top four teams. If enough teams register, two divisions will be created, otherwise a single league will be formed. Call the El Dorado Hills CSD registration desk before the Oct. 26 deadline to register a team.

Youth basketball league

Join this fun, eight-week recreational league sponsored by the El Dorado Hills CSD and learn the fundamentals while building or expanding on existing basketball skills. Youth in grades 3 and above play on a full court; kids in lower grades play on smaller courts with lowered hoops.  Games are played at the CSD Gym and other local gyms, Jan. 5-Feb. 23, 2013, with practices beginning in December. The $132 registration fee includes a uniform and personalized award for each child. Grades may be combined to form teams. This league fills up fast; the deadline to register is Oct. 19. Call the CSD desk or go online for more information.

Tennis team camp

Students on high school tennis teams or who are interested in participating will find this camp sponsored by Placerville Recreation a place to learn, grow and have fun in the process. Join El Dorado High tennis coach, Jill Mitchell, to advance your game with conditioning, attention to stroke mechanics, serves, strategy, practice drills and shot selection. Games and competitions will also be included. Sign up for one week or all three. Camp will be held at El Dorado’s newly resurfaced tennis courts on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 23-25; Oct. 30-Nov. 1; and Nov. 6-8, from 3:45-5 p.m. The fee is $25 per week or $68 for all three sessions.
